Movie review: Death Wish 2018

Hey everyone, my name is Anthony and welcome back to movie review.

We've seen or heard plenty of gun shooting that many police trying to capture various gunners to keep civilians peace in cities, parks, villages and many other location. Which is no wonder how many people in Hollywood making action movies of crime actions or crime dramas over the years.

But some took a serious level of action with vigilantism, one of them is "Death Wish" from 1974, based on the novel with a same from two years, the movie starred Charles Bronson who seeks revenge over his dead wife to killing gang of murderers. As a result, despite the Box-Office success, it was met with controversies of, you guessed it, vigilantism, an unlimited punishment of crimes and the story is completely opposite from the book.

Even though the film had a controversy from the critics, but it had a cult following with sequels, but many of them are either good or bad for the opinions. So after 44 years, "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer" (in US)  decided to cash in for a reboot from the original one with John McClain from "Die-Hard".

The remake of "Death Wish" is a 2018 action vigilante movie directed Eli Roth, produced by Roger Birnbaum and written by Joe Carnahan.

Like i said, this one of remake that we're surprised that maybe it will be good that it has a director who acted on "Inglorious Basterds" and even Bruce Willis. But similar from the original one, when the trailer showed, it had a controversy for a questionable racism or something. But the anticipation turned into somewhat concerned, because it was recently released 16 days after the Florida school shooting, which it would've been better to put this on hold for push the date or maybe reshoot to fix the problem or something.

So, with that out of way, will this one gonna be a good remake, or is it another one of a bad remake?

Well, lets find out.

The Story
If you're expecting to find out a different story to add anything new?

Well, i hate to tell you, the story is the same from the original one, but a small different. As you know, it started where Chicago is in risk from the shooting from crimes, then we introduce Doctor Paul Kersey who works on surgery in hospital from removing bullets and other stuff, he live with his wife Lucy and his daughter Jordan. However, when Paul was in his business, his wife and his daughter was being gun-shot by the thugs of "Knox", leaving Lucy died and Jordan was suffered a coma. Devastated from the shooting, he seeks revenge over the gang in order to kill them as a vigilante.

Like i said, the story is pretty much the same, but in a different element that unlike in the movie where he moved to Arizona, he stayed in Chicago, or even a daughter in coma than sexual assault. Though i haven't watch the original one, but i think the change in the remake is rather a boring choice, i guess its because the movie focused on gun shooting action what we like to watch. Not to mention, the movie also have a plot element to have a brothers relationship between Paul and Frank, but i felt that its more a filler, but il talk about the characters later. And they also add the news moment about the shooting of Paul in hood that he was nicknamed as "Grim Reaper of Chicago", which i don't like that idea that its just probably lazy, why not "The dark shooter" or even "Crime Killer", works for me.

The story of the remake is rather nothing special, which again, we expect if it add something new for the elements.

The production
I can easily say the the presentation of this movie looks rather nice, just a typical action movie with gun shooting. The gun shooting looks cool and entertaining and they did a good work for adding gruesome effect of killing bad guys and wounds. The filming location is obviously in Chicago, but they also shoot on Montreal, i guess its because filming in Canada is less expensive than US like LA or New York, despite the film's budget was over 30 million dollars, thats about ten times more than the original, which it was 3 million.

However, the film was first developed 12 years ago, the film was supposed done and star Sylvester Stallone, which he wanted to make a movie where Paul was originally a good cop without using a gun, but that plan was changed that Joe Carnahan and MGM took over for the rewrite to going back to the violence with vigilantism, but it the directing was changing multiple time that it was originally to be Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, then changed to Eli Roth. In other words, the writing had been changed numerous times for what it supposed to be approved for Bruce Willis.

Not to mention, the film is kinda a bit quick, since it takes about 1 hour and 47 minutes to go.

The production looks nice, even though its a typical action budget movie.

The characters
Its not easy to explain the characters who they are, because they're rather the same, but adding some new personalities and changing development.

First is Paul Kersey (played by Bruce Willis), unlike the first one where he's an architect in New York, he's a doctor in Chicago from a savage violent in the city. But rather than being helped by his boss for a shooting test, he's doing it all by himself, which im pretty he's more into an anti-hero in the movie, which i kinda like his change. But of course, Bruce did a great work of his role, since he's an action star.

Then there's Paul's daughter Jordan (played by Camila Morrone) has her development that she's a student who plays a soccer before her coma. I find her to be average, just a daughter.

And we have young brother named Frank (played by Vincent D'Onofrio), who's an opposite direction of Paul, which he's...    Pretty much a side character with less appearance with no development and reveal until the third act. Which, i though he's gonna be an interesting one, but he's just another character appeared for unknown reason.

While the rest of the characters are pretty much the same for the personalities, but with name change. Its not easy to tell which one of them are considered to be likable. But like i said, Bruce Willis's main role is easily the main focus and the only likable that we like to see him in action.

And now for my final opinion of this film.
Overall, "Death Wish 2018" is probably an average movie with nothing special, typical story, an ok presentation with shooting scenes and most of characters are just...  there. This is one of those remake that they wanted to cash in for modern viewers, but in the end, its a remake without any execution. But, i can't blame for some actors who did a nice work, i mean they did a good job, but i probably felt that some of them deserve better for being in remake. If you like a modern action movie, maybe this one is for you, but for others, just ignore it and watch the original one from 1974.

But, is it the worst remake ever made?  Not really, i don't think its bad than the godawful reboot of Ghostbusters. But i don't want to carrying on my rant for why Hollywood cares to do a remake of old films, because it will be a different story in my opinion.

Either way, i rate this movie, 5/10.

So this ends of my movie review. If you have your opinion or any random suggestions, let me know in the comments bellow. And support me on "Patreon.com/Blackevil915" for your big request.
