Movie review: The Incredibles 2

*walks out of movie theater*

Wow...     I have no words to say...!

Hey everyone, my name is Anthony and welcome back to Movie Review.

Back in 2017, i talked about "The Incredibles", which is easily one of my favorite Pixar movies with Toy Story, Bug's life, Finding Nemo/Dory, Wall-E and even Inside out. I mean, i remembered seeing it as a kid that i loved it, and looking back as i grew to 22, i still love it.

And its no wonder that from few years ago, Brad Bird wanted to make a sequel, but it was on early hold that he was working two movies such as Ratatouille in Pixar which is his second successful work, Tomorrowland is rather average and he's done outside of Disney/Pixar such as "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol that it was the first MI film i ever watch, but pretty good.

And finally, he went back in business of family heroes after 14 years, but boy, it showed...!

"The Incredibles 2" is a 2018 animated superhero Pixar film written/directed by Brad Bird and produced by John Walker (And yes, he's back) and Nicole Paradis Grindle.

This is a film that a lot of fans really like to see what's happening after three months from the first movie that we like to see. Although there's a game called "The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer", which it was a "sequel" from the first movie, in video game, but not a lotta people will like this game and i never played it. So lets pretend that it will never happened.

Of course, when it was previewed during Winter Olympic in South Korea, it got a lot of excitement with millions of views on social media, which i have to admit, i was overly anticipated to see it.

So now we got the film came out recently and with all that said, will this movie holds up after 14 years, or is gonna be a "Super Flop"?

Well, lets find out.

The Story
The movie was quickly started with a bang, in other words, it picks up after the cliffhanger ending from the first movie, where our heroes are facing against The Underminer. Unfortunately, they failed their goal that The Underminer was escaped with the money from the bank without any trace, causing them to get arrested for the damages and the authorities is still calling the superheroes are illegal. Not only that, Rick Dicker was resigned for shutting down Super Relocation program. But it was just the beginning, where Bob (Mr. Incredible), Helen (ElastiGirl) and Lucius Best (Frozone) are contacted by DEVTECH's owner named Winston Daevor that he wanted to bringing superheroes back after the backlash from 15 years ago. And so, Winston picked ElastiGirl for considering less destructive of superpowers and she accepted to go as she's going back in business as a superhero while Bob is taking care his kids. But its up to her for not only saving citizens, but also dealing with our new villain named "The Screenslaver".

Although that the story feels like from the first movie, but execution itself is actually done better. Where we like to see ElastiGirl back in action that we like to see in entertainment and Bob's taking care his kids was not only stressful, but in hilarious way, especially with Jack-Jack has every powers that we have never seen before. Aside of a subplot of Bob's take care, there's another subplot of a relationship between Violet and Tony since the beginning that she wanted to going at movie theater, but sadly, she was accidentally being exposed of her secret identity in front of Tony, causing her relationship in embarrassment that Bob wants to bring her back to him, which i understand why, but i won't get more detail. As for the humor in this movie, oh man, it was pretty funny, especially with some hilarious dialogues or even some funny moments with Jack-Jack. But, since this is a PG rated movie, its obvious that they put little bit mature of the dialogue with "Oh my god" for kids. Im not kidding, when i was in movie theater, i notice there're kids watching this PG rated movie.

Though the story is the same as before, but actually a well-execution.

The Animation
Well, its yet another good work of animation by Pixar. But of course, it has to be updated with good quality since Toy Story 3, Finding Dory or even Cars 3.

For starter, the presentation of this film pretty good for a new quality and textures, they did a nice work for the new look and stuff. The action scenes are pretty great and probably more fun than the first one (no offense), that it has helicopter scene, chasing the train with "Elasticycle" or even in the beginning act, even though like to see fun family, but we still like the action scene involving chases, fight scenes and explosions. The supers with suit and abilities, its nice to see them back along with update, with Violet's projectile, Voyd's portal, ElastiGirl's stretch/shape-shifting ability or even Jack-Jack multiple powers, i really like to see the new powers, and for the supersuits, its nice to see them back with the current Incredibles suit, flashback suits, ElastiGirl's new outfit or even the new supers's outfit. Some new supers's appearance looks good and colorful, but some others is rather gimmicky, i know that it was the idea to bringing back the old routs of superhero appearances, i mean i like the vintage superheroes, but its not perfect for the reason of gimmick. And if you ask me for ElastiGirl's new outfit, it looks like a remake version from the flashback of the first movie, but it looks cool with red and grey. As for the character designs, its nice for the update which i like some appearances, even though some female characters aside of ElastiGirl may have a big hips, which im pretty sure they want to make a fan-service a bit, but im fine for them. However, my biggest nitpick of the animation is the use of epileptic flicker image from hypnotism of Screenslaver, it would've ok to use a typical hypnosis images, but with flashy image? Im considering it to be unwatchable to some viewers who suffer from epileptic seizure. I mean, when i saw these on the big screen, i was trying to covering the screen from my view without causing myself for being blind or even getting dizzy.

The animation is pretty good for the new quality and action, but do you really think its a good idea to have some hypnotism scene that may cause a seizure? Im seriously call a small PSA for sensitive viewers, Pixar.

The characters
For those you have seen the previous film, il give a little bit explanation and the new development with our heroes.

First is Helen Parr, aka ElastiGirl/Mrs. Incredible (voiced by Holly Hunter), from before, she's a feisty mother that she cared and respect for Bob and kids, even that she's resourceful with our heroes. This time, she's the main focus that like Bob, she's accepted for her mission, but more careful on her own, but of course, she's a lot stretchy with her powers and forms (No pun attended). But of course, Holly's role is a welcoming return of our favorite mother.

Next up is Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson), from before, he's our main hero for doing on his own, but probably risking himself with his own life and power. Here, though he learn his lesson to be working together in family, but he's also a laughably difficult father to keeping eye for the kids, even though he may also have a drama for why he's eager as a main hero back then. But again, Craig is also a welcoming return.

As for the kids, even though some remains the same but adding new development, like Dash (voiced by Huck Milner who replaced Spencer Fox due to his age) is not only a speedy boy, but he's also troublesome and Jack-Jack (aka J.J. that i like to call for short) is not only comedy relief, but he's also a big surprise baby with 17 powers (im not kidding, he's almost like OP when i was doing a research. Oh and Spoiler Alert, i think...).

But one kid who got a big development is Violet (voiced by Sarah Vowell), unlike before she's a emo to confident hero, in this movie, her main deal is to have a relationship with Tony, but sadly due to her father's big mistake when she was accidentally exposed her identity, that made her completely devastated and lost her hope as a super. I mean geez, its not easy to feel bad for her, despite that aside Helen or Bob, i like Violet too. Even though that despite her pissed off mood, but she gets a lot interesting later on.

And there's Lucius Best, aka Frozone (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson), though he's pretty much the same as a sidekick/ Bob Parr's best friend, but he's also likable for his laid-back persona and another welcoming return, with Sam Jackson.

As for the rest old characters, Edna Mode (voiced by Brad Bird himself) is nice to see her again, but sadly short, Rick Dicker (voiced by Jonathan Banks for replacing Bud Luckey due to his death in this year. Sad...) is now resigned agent, though he's rather nice, but again short. And The Underminer (voiced by John Ratzenberger), he's just a thrown out villain from the beginning.

As for the new casts, i find them are rather averagely good.

First there's Daevor siblings like Winston (voiced by Bob Odenkirk) who's probably a likable new cast with well-written character that he likes to bringing Supers back from illegality with telecommunications company. In other words, he wanted bring superheroes back to bring peace and love with citizens.

As for his sister Evelyn (voiced by Catherine Keener) who's a sister of technological genius without revealing problem, although i find her to be a bit unnecessary, but i im not gonna spoil it later on.

As for the new villain "Screenslaver" (voiced by Bill Wise), at first, i find him to be pretty cool and disturbing looking with his dark appearance with mask with skull like and goggle who hacks medias with hypnotism power. Although he's gonna be the main villain, but sadly, he could've be a lot more chance to shine like Syndrome. But again, im not gonna give more detail.

As for the new Supers, there's Voyd (voiced by Sophia Bush) who's a fangirl of ElastiGirl with the ability of creating portal. Even though she can be awkward with stuttering. As for the rest of new Supers, they're rather look cool and other times gimmicky as i mention before, but they're just showing of new heroes in the background.

Even though some new casts is above average, its our main heroes is easily likable for rooting and maybe sympathy.

And now for my final opinion of this film.
The best way to describe this movie is "That Was Totally Wicked!!"! Sorry, i really want to say it for a great return.

Anyway, this probably not only the best Superhero film like Avengers Infinity War and Black Panther, a best Pixar film since the first one and quiet possibly the best animated sequel i have ever seen after 14 year and it is a worth of waiting.

With story is pretty good (despite a bit similar, but in reverse), lovable characters (aside of Screenslaver who's kinda disappointed), amazing action, it was funny and kinda sad and the animation is outstandingly great for the upgrade. This is the film that i lost my words after it was done since "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" or even "Infinity War". I mean, i can definitely say that this is a must-watch film that you deserve to see it if you 're fan of superheroes, Pixar or even the new franchise of The Incredibles. Go ahead, watch this movie and it will never disappoints.

Oh! And you probably wondering about my thoughts of Pixar short called "Bao"? Well, despite its the first time it was directed by an Asian woman, but its rather a weird concept where a mother has a son in anthropomorphic dumpling. But it was simply heart-warming involving mother and her son. And... Not much else to say that i skip ahead. Il give a short 6/10.

Anyway, for my rating of this movie....    Aw forget it, since its my new favorite film, il give it 10/10. But it would've been like 9 or 9.5 with some flaws, but as a fan of Pixar and superheroes, il give it to 10.

And does that mean its the best movie of this year? I think so, but again, we have to wait towards the end. But its more specifically a "Best animated film of 2018" in my opinion, but again, we have to wait for some other animated films for who's gonna be the next best one of the year, including "Ralph breaks the internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2".

So this ends of my movie review, if you guys have your opinion or any suggestions, let me know at comment bellow and support me on Pateron.com/Blackevil915 for your big request.
